In fact, you could go to their site to fire up a call right now for free. But the really cool part is that you can self-host Jisti on your VPS to give you more control over your data and infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>It's an interesting alternative to Zoom or Google Hangouts and it's easy to set up on most Linux servers. In this article, we'll show you how to install Jitsi Meet on a VPS running Centos 8.<\/p>\n<p><em>Note: <a href=\"https:\/\/jitsi.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jitsi.org<\/a> doesn't officially have a supported CentOS-compatible release candidate. So instead, we'll use Docker to deploy a functional Jitsi Meet setup.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Not running CentOS?<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssdnodes.com\/blog\/install-jitsi-meet-on-ubuntu-18-04-tutorial\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Click here to set up Jitsi Meet on Ubuntu<\/a><br \/>\nClick here to set up Jitsi Meet on Debian<\/p>\n<h2><a class=\"md-header-anchor md-print-anchor\" name=\"header-n141\"><\/a> Why is Jitsi better than Zoom?<\/h2>\n<p>First of all, we're not saying that it is!<\/p>\n<p>But there have been questions about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/news\/zoom-every-security-issue-uncovered-in-the-video-chat-app\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">quality of Zoom's privacy<\/a> that are leading a lot of people to look for other options. Among other things, Jitsi doesn't require you to create an account or install browser plugins to work.<\/p>\n<p>Plus Jitsi Meet comes with a pretty rich feature set <strong>completely free<\/strong>, things like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Screen sharing for presentations or document reviews<\/li>\n<li>Fun, customizable meeting URLs<\/li>\n<li>Invite as many users as your infrastructure will support<\/li>\n<li>Collaborative document editing (with <a href=\"https:\/\/etherpad.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Etherpad<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Google and Microsoft Calendar integrations<\/li>\n<li>Integration with other collaboration software, like Slack<\/li>\n<li>Mobile apps for Android and Apple<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><a class=\"md-header-anchor md-print-anchor\" name=\"header-n160\"><\/a> Prerequisites to run Jitsi Meet on your VPS<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Root or Sudo User (this article defaults to the root user)<\/li>\n<li>Fully-Qualified Domain Name (FQDN) pointing to the IP Address of your server<\/li>\n<li>Server hostname set to match the above FQDN<\/li>\n<li>IP Address for your server<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/git-scm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Git<\/a> installed and configured<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssdnodes.com\/blog\/getting-started-docker-vps\/\">Docker and Docker Compose installed<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Minimum 1-core, 1GB Ram VPS running CentOS 8<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><a class=\"md-header-anchor md-print-anchor\" name=\"header-n176\"><\/a> Installing Jitsi Meet on Centos 8 using Docker<\/h2>\n<p>Okay, let's begin.<\/p>\n<p>Clone the git repository for the docker-based Jitsi Meet instance and switch to the folder it downloads using this command:<\/p>\n<pre><code class=\"language-shell\" lang=\"shell\">git clone https:\/\/github.com\/jitsi\/docker-jitsi-meet &amp;&amp; cd docker-jitsi-meet\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>Copy the example .env file to its own.<\/p>\n<pre><code class=\"language-shell\" lang=\"shell\">cp example.env .env\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>Make the required <code>CONFIG<\/code> directories.<\/p>\n<pre><code class=\"language-shell\" lang=\"shell\">mkdir -p ~\/.jitsi-meet-cfg\/{web\/letsencrypt,transcripts,prosody,jicofo,jvb}\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>Finally, start the docker instance with the following command:<\/p>\n<pre><code class=\"language-shell\" lang=\"shell\">docker-compose up -d\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<p>Now you can navigate to your install at the FQDN you set up beforehand.
